Electricians are known to be one of the most in demand professions in the world. Be it any country or state or region, where there is electricity, there is a need for these workers. They take immense risks, both to themselves and to their customers. Any little mistake of theirs could cost someone their life and Baltimore home electricians belongings. It is not uncommon to hear about fires caused due to faulty wiring, short circuits and bursting of appliances. Though it is not always their fault, it is also true that there could be lesser accidents if proper care is taken in rectifying such problems.

Types of electricians

Though they can be divided based on their ranks, it is easier to do so after they have been categorized, based on their specialties. The first category is the residential electrician, the one who comes to homes and fixes the problems whenever called by the customers. Commercial electricians have the training to work with bigger electrical equipments which are connected to mechanical implements. These electricians are known to work with both the different circuits, breakers, power outlets, installations and fixtures running on electricity, but on different scales. Commercial Electricians use their trade on a bigger scale than their residential counterparts.

Ranking of electricians

The electricians are ranked based on their experience and qualifications. For Maryland home electricians, there are three main options. They can begin as apprentices who work under the supervision of much more experienced journeymen and master electricians. As mentioned before, the experience makes the difference. Journeymen can work alone and strike out on their own after gaining the requisite years of experience working under the master electricians. However, they cannot get others to work under them. Theirs is merely a certificate that they can work alone. Only master electricians can hire other masters, journeymen and apprentices of a minimum number and have a contractor’s license.

Licensing of electricians

There is no such thing as a common certificate for all theMaryland residential electricians to work in the industry, yet there is a common code followed by all of them. It is called the National Electric Code which recognizes the three basic skill sets of master, apprentice and journeyman. They are required to have 3-5 years of training as an apprentice before apprentices are allowed to graduate to the journeyman level. Similarly, only with sufficient experience can the latter get the master certificate. Journeyman certificate is handed over when the apprentices have completed the minimum on the job training hours and classroom training before passing the licensing exam.

Reciprocity and Representation

There is a concept called the reciprocity of the certificate, wherein the electricians will be allowed to work in states which accept the certificates of the issuing certificates. However, that would happen only if sufficient time had elapsed since the issue of the certificate also the electrician must still be in a good standing with the state. There are certain professional organizations which cater to the representational needs of this section of professional workmen. The most noteworthy among them is the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers which offers the NJATC and NECA for the electricians to converge together for each other and stand strong.
