In the 1930's the weekly Saturday evening radio show "Hawaii Calls," hosted by Harry Owens, sparked 9 year old Tom Pickett's love of music.
He learned to play the Hawaiian steel guitar and never looked back. In 1949, Tom graduated from Sheridan High School and continued to pursue his love for music at Butler University. He graduated with a degree in education in 1955.
Tom's military service brought him down to Columbus in 1956. As a captain in the U.S. Air Force, Tom worked as an air-traffic controller at Bakalar Air Base, before opening his store.
Tom Pickett's Music Center opened it's doors in 1959 and had a single guitar that hung on the wall. He would walk door to door offering guitar lessons to build up a clientele. This determination helped lay the foundation for success that has kept people coming through his doors for 58 years.
Pickett has taught over 20,000 students and that number continues to grow. While he loves to see the transition students undergo while learning, it is fostering a lifelong love for music that he finds most memorable.
His past students include Vice President Mike Pence, Singer/songwriter Tim Grimm, and songwriter/producer Tirk Wilder.
