Frankly, they were just happy to have me around: looking awesome, being hilarious, bringing to the table a ton of relationship upside. It was smooth sailing through the courting process (love you baby!). But unfortunately it isn’t always this way, with varying forms of meatheady-ness coming through on the part of brothers, fathers, etc. wanting to ensure you "deserve" their sister, daughter, etc. So goes Kevin Hart’s problem in this flick.

From the trailer, this movie appears to have come printed directly out of of some Hollywood movie-writing sweatshop in which small,underpaid children are forced to cut and paste pieces from other successful (or not) scripts and put them together into a new movie. Once this process is complete, the studio just hires some big names and calls it a day. If you have any other insight into how this movie was created I’d love to hear it. Despite Kevin Smith’s Cop Out doing its damnedest to make me never enjoy another buddy cop comedy again, The Heat has finished wiping the slate clean, and Think Like a Man’s Tim Story is inviting America to Ride Along with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in a fight against crime, one corny joke at a time. I’m looking forward to this movie more than I thought I would before the first trailer came out, and it’s based mostly on the chemistry between the two leads, which covers up any imperfections with energetic line readings.

Hart plays Ben, a high-school security guard whose life is about to change now that he’s been accepted into the police academy, which he hopes will impress his fiancé Angela (Tika Sumpter). Of course, Angela’s brother James (Cube) is this badass detective who thinks Ben is just some small fry. (And rightfully so, as most people who stand up against Ice Cube fail to come off as very menacing.) So James takes Ben on a ride along in the vein of Training Day, which ends up being a ridiculously action-packed trip that puts them up against one of the city’s most dangerous criminals. Even though Training Day is the movie name-checked, Ride Along is essentially a melting pot of Lethal Weapon B-stories, where Hart is playing both Joe Pesci’s "how did I get mixed up in all this?" role as well as Chris Rock’s "I’m just trying to marry Murtaugh’s daughter" role.

Luckily, I don’t think anyone is too old for this shit, because some of the jokes hit, like James being impressed that Ben broke a glass case with a man’s head, while other jokes are pretty painful to sit through, like the opening proposal fake-out and the exaggerated gun recoil. How am I supposed to actually care about the eventual danger that these characters are in when Looney Tunes is apparently one of the inspirations? That said, I’ll watch this without any hesitation when I’m in the mood for a flick that doesn’t have white guys making dick jokes the whole time. But if the trailers themselves weren’t enough, somebody behind Ride Along also had the genius idea to make a clip from Hart performing a rendition of Skee-Lo’s I Wish. Oh, you know the song if you were watching MTV in 1995. If something that random and fourth wall-breaking happened in Ride Along, I’d be all the more impressed. It would make up for seeing another lame take on the "man screaming like a woman" joke. Get your game face on and take a ride when the film hits theaters on January 17, 2014.

Tim Story directs and I think we can take a stroll through his career to make an educated guess as to where this latest will fall on the Tomatometer. It starts off pretty well with Barbershop (82%). And that’s pretty much the end of the good times following up a great first effort with Taxi (10%), Fantastic Four (27%), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (37%) and then bouncing back just a tad with Think Like a Man (53%). What does that tell us? Tim Story might have saved all his best work for the first effort. This latest movie will trend along with the rest of his career. Not funny, and not well received.

Personally, his stand-up comedy never struck me as brilliant, and his previous acting somehow rubbed me unfavorably, but finally seeing Hart enter a role in which he could dominate screen time, I sat there dumbfounded by the limitless energy this funnyman possessed. Spitting out lightning-quick jokes, Hart brings the same fiery intensity to each scene, and asserts a commanding personality that comedians like Eddie Murphy used to possess. Make any comparisons you want, but as this young man’s career continues blasting off into the stratosphere, I see Kevin Hart as a pint-sized Eddie Murphy, selling out stadiums full of screaming fans and landing roles alongside some of Hollywood’s best. Ride Along may not be for everyone, but emphatic Kevin Hart fans are going to love watching Mighty Kev bounce around like a firecracker on Chinese New Year.

We’ve seen so many cop films that don’t care about any realistic details. Spark a shootout in a crowded mall with European gangsters? Eh, all you’ll get is a weak tongue-lashing from your Captain and it’s off to the next scene. Protocol? There’s protocol for being a law enforcement officer? Sure, you’re not watching Ride Along for gripping crime dramatics, but with a script so unintentionally silly, it becomes hard to believe there are actually more real cops on the force besides Ice Cube. With strong enough comedic attempts, such blatant professional ignorance can be written off, but when a film already running through the motions of mediocrity continually falls back on a weakly imagined script, not even Kevin Hart’s best delivery can save the day.

While Hart has mainly been seen as a supporting player, he's beginning to get more and more starring roles in Hollywood. Kevin Hart's first real Hollywood vehicle, Ride Along, premiered this weekend. With $48.1 million already in the bank, Kevin Hart's first bona fide success has come with this movie. The marketing put Hart at the forefront and did a great job selling this movie. Word of mouth has been great from audiences (they gave it an "A" Cinemascore), but critics have lambasted the film. Going into this film, I was curious as to which side I would fall on. I loved the trailers, but it's still a comedy released in January. After seeing the film, I can assure you that Ride Along isn't terrible, but it certainly is not a good movie

However, I was worried when reviews started pouring in. I wasn't sure if the film would be any good and it turned out to be pretty mediocre. The first two-thirds of Ride Along are disastrous and just flat-out boring. Hart's comedic talents are wasted and I was left wondering if anyone had written any jokes for Hart that were not in the trailer. Ice Cube was so mediocre and it just seemed like nobody cared. Then the last third of the movie was actually pretty entertaining. I thought that there were a few good scenes and some nice action pieces. But still, it's not enough for me to recommend this film. It's a pretty mediocre comedy that is filled with cliches and actually isn't all that funny.

The script is so poorly written and deals with cliches that are so obvious and predictable. When Ride Along focuses on the relationship between Ben and James, it's awful. It's so stupid and just moves from one predictable, cliched scene to the next. When it focuses on Ben's pursuit of "Omar", this mysterious crime lord, it's a little funnier, but still poorly written. The double-cross by two characters, the appearance of one mysterious character, the kidnapping of another: this film is so stupidly predictable, it's not even funny. The writers do nothing new here. Ride Along would probably be a better movie if it was actually consistently funny. It's not. Ride Along is sporadically funny. While watching this movie, I realized at one point that I hadn't laughed during the last fifteen minutes of the movie. That's a bad sign. For the first two-thirds of this movie, the only funny things are the jokes that were in the trailer. The last third has some funnier bits, but they still aren't any funnier than a network TV sitcom.

His talents could be used in much funnier and more innovative films, and I was disappointed that Ride Along did nothing to use him better. But Hart shouldn't feel bad, because this movie really didn't do anything with any of the cast members. Ice Cube's character is thinly written and boring. Tika Sumpter is useless. And John Leguizamo and Bryan Callen add nothing to the film. Heck, most of the supporting characters add nothing but another pile of cliches to the film. Ride Along also has an ending problem. It should end in one spot. Heck, I was almost certain that the characters who keep the movie going had been killed already. But they weren't, and the movie keeps going. And the most ridiculous part is that none of it makes sense. One of the characters gets shot and has to go to the hospital. But when he has to save the day, everybody forgets about the injury. What? In addition, Ben impersonates a crime lord in one scene and two of the criminals in the room have seen Ben before and know that he isn't a crime lord. When I look back on movie to review them, it's things like these that bring down the film's grade.

Hart does have some funny gags, but for most of the movie, they're few and far between. He does have one genuinely great scene towards the end, but it goes on for way too long. The final act isn't terrible and I was into the movie. But if you look back on it, the final act makes little sense and goes on for too long. So, while there were a few good things about Ride Along, they don't really help save the movie that much. This is one of those movies where my opinion of it changes is I write the review. Looking back on it now, I can safely say that Ride Along is a pretty disappointing comedy. It's so insanely predictable and cliched and doesn't even try to use the talent that it has. Hart is funny and the last act is genuinely enjoyable, but it's still too little too late. I think that if you want a really good buddy cop comedy, you should stay home and watch Hot Fuzz. Don't bother with Ride Along, because I'm pretty sure that you've already seen it in one way or another.
