So this past Saturday, Cartoon Network annoyed fans of DC Nation by pulling the entire block from their line up without even the producers of the shows knowing what happened until after the fact. DVRs recorded reruns of shows they didn’t mean to catch, while kids and adults alike were befuddled with reactions ranging from mild disappointment to absolute outrage, complete with plenty of hate mail being thrown at the network, who quickly claimed that all was well and that DC Nation would be back in January… too little too late for most, it would seem, but then iTunes came to the rescue. While not advertising the episodes, iTunes made available both the unaired Green Lantern and Young Justice episodes that were meant to air on DC Nation, and thus it was that true fans were able to watch them in spite of Cartoon Network’s lapse in judgment, myself included.
So what did I think of the episode? Well, its a big one.

Last time we followed Aqualad as he proved himself to the light and got to meet their client. This time we get to see who they are, and it turns out to be who many suspected… the Reach. The Reach are, of course, the creator’s of Blue Beetle’s scarab, and these connections are explored fully herein, as the Black Beetle works with the scientists of the Reach to figure out what has gone wrong with Blue Beetle’s scarab. Unfortunate for them, however, our heroes have planned a retaliatory attack to get their people back. Being lead to their location using Tim (Robin) and Barbara (Batgirl) in civvies as tracking decoys, Nightwing leads the team in their rescue, but not all goes according to plan as Black Beetle gets involved, and things get even worse as Miss Martian confronts Aqualad, completely unaware of his true role in the proceedings, and takes drastic steps that may have severe repercussions down the road.

This episode was an intense solitary tale spear heading the storyline forward without remorse. The reveal of the Reach actually being involved, and Impulse explaining why he really came back in time, gives the whole season a new found sense of importance. But the biggest thing in this episode, in my opinion, is Miss Martian coming into the knowledge of the plan Nightwing and Aqualad had set in motion as she attacked Aqualad’s mind. What she did to him is yet to be seen, as they didn’t really give much time to this event, opting to show her personal reaction to the information she pulls from him rather than the effects on him by her doing so. Has she scrambled his brain as we have seen her do to others in the past, and if so, what may this lead to? Could she have inadvertently given him amnesia, which could lead to him actually becoming a villain for a time, which in turn would put Artemis’ life in jeopardy? Or could she have actually made him a vegetable, making him yet another hero lost in the line of duty? Its a shocking moment that introduces a number of questions with a lot of emotional fallout in store regardless of the answers.
