The main question going into Saturday's matchup with Northwestern, of course, is whether Denard Robinson will start at quarterback. Robinson has been suffering from a nerve injury in his throwing elbow and missed much of the loss at Nebraska and all of the victory at Minnesota. No matter who is at quarterback, Michigan should be able to move the ball. Northwestern’s defense is slightly above average at stopping the run, but last in the conference against the pass. As mentioned in yesterday’s Friend vs Foe, both Penn State and Nebraska were able to put up gaudy numbers through the air in their wins over NW. In the season opener, Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib threw for 482 yards on 66 attempts. Northwestern is allowing just under 400 yards per game on defense this season. This is a defense that Denard Robinson should be able to carve up with his legs or Devin Gardner should be able to carve up with his arm.
Regardless of the quarterback, Michigan (6-3, 4-1) could take a giant step forward in the tight Legends Division race by getting past Northwestern (7-2, 3-2). What it's led to is this: in the last three games, Northwestern has generated 737 yards on the ground and scored eight touchdowns, with just 272 yards and three TDs through the air. The Wildcats are 2-1 in those three games, having blown a late lead to Nebraska, but despite that setback, they are committed to their "new" approach. The Wildcats feature an intriguing up-tempo offense, while at the same time, display a rather anemic defense. I have a feeling that Northwestern might just pull this out. They are better on offense than michigan. Michigans d was good but has been sloppy the last few games. If they show up like that against northwestern they will lose do to the fact that northwestern can out score them.
What is best is for a healthy Denard Robinson to line up under center tomorrow, but an ailing Robinson creates a scenario in which Gardner could be the preferred choice. If it comes to that, he'll be ready after proving to himself that he is capable of being the QB Michigan needs him to be.
