People, Profit and Planet Sharing the Podium
The sports industry makes a significant detrimental impact on the environment through the production of gear, energy consumption, waste generation, transportation and water use. For an industry that is reliant of climate stability, fair play and environmental issues are critical.
When it comes to these impact, however, the sports industry has a powerful instrument that can be used to advance environmental and social issues. The popularity of sporting events and widespread participation in sports activities by people all over the world, gives the sports industry a far reaching voice. Sport has the opportunity, not only to enhance social equality, but also to amplify environmental stewardship.
The On Side Edge
Well-designed sustainability systems offer opportunities for increasing revenues through expanded market reach, enhanced customer/fan loyalty, and stronger sponsor relationships. Cost reduction from operational efficiencies and energy and waste management also helps boost financial results.
In many ways, becoming a truly sustainable organization is like becoming a world class athlete. It does not happen with the flip of a switch. It takes practice, monitoring of performance, and training tactics that enhance strengths and minimize weaknesses. It also demands a dedicated team, skilled coaching and a healthy dose of competition.
