To celebrate, I was eager to review one of the new films of the season. My thoughts on Disney’s new animated musical, Frozen, come on the heels of my getting momentarily excited about an indie film that bore the original name of Frozen, The Snow Queen (reviewed here!). Fortunately for Disney, their beleaguered production Frozen is better than the ridiculous independent film The Snow Queen. Unfortunately for Disney, Frozen is such a typical Disney animated film that offers so little in the way of surprises, thrills, or genuine enjoyment for adults that it is impossible for me to recommend it.

While there are plenty of Disney films that make musicals out of fairy tales, like this year’s big Disney Blu-Ray release, The Little Mermaid (reviewed here!), the success of those movies hinged on great music and animation that had a realism for the world it created. As ridiculous as it might seem, Frozen suffers as much from not having an obvious hit as it does from having a more stylized sense of animation than the truly classic Disney hits. The cartoonish quality of the physics of Frozen might seem forgivable given that one of the main characters is the sidekick living snowman, but the look and feel of the film is often more ridiculous than fantastic, which undermines the longterm viability of the movie.

Elsa, rather incredibly, can manipulate the cold and she has the ability to freeze objects and water almost effortlessly. Anna appears to be a normal girl and they play together like normal sisters. While playing, though, Elsa hurts Anna by accident and to prevent her from ever hurting Anna (or anyone else) again, her memory of the incident is wiped and the two are separated. They grow up the rest of their childhood apart and years later when Elsa is to be installed as Queen of Arendelle, Elsa and Anna have a fight again. When that happens, Elsa’s powers are revealed again and when she flees, Arendelle is cast into eternal winter.

To that end, Kristoff and Anna set off to find Elsa and bring her back to Arendelle. Accompanied by a musical, wisecracking snowman, Olaf, the pair journeys across the snowscape to try to find Elsa, while finding themselves drawn more and more together.

The story focuses more on the familial love between Anna and Elsa, with the Anna and Kristoff acting very much as a b-plot. Anna’s sense of determination to restore life and color to Arendelle is clearly motivated by a love she has for her sister. Given the years Anna and Elsa spend separated following the childhood incident, Anna’s love for Elsa seems much more abstract than realistic and that undermines her willpower. Sure, she’s a plucky Disney Princess, but the pluck appears on the page more than as an organic manifestation of her character: she loves her sister because she is her sister, not because of the intense years of bonding they shared growing up (whatwith spending their more recent years separated).

Kristoff is a generic Disney love interest and he is easily overshadowed by the charisma of Olaf. Olaf is goofy and gets many of the good lines to set up the big moments, which is largely what one expects from a Disney sidekick. The wisecracks from Olaf come pretty much when one expects to keep the pace tight and that acts against the film in some ways; if you’ve seen any three Disney films, you can pretty much call when Olaf will intervene to say the right thing to Anna or Kristoff to keep the quest going and the movie flowing.

Gad is vocally expressive and he was perfectly cast to play Olaf. But even Gad illustrates just how troubled Frozen was as a Disney production: sidekicks in Disney films have had a tendency to be runaway parts sought by well-established performers. While I like Gad, he doesn’t have the recognizable quality of, for example, Gilbert Gottfried when Aladdin was released or Eddie Murphy (from Mulan! Any critique of Gad, though, is divorced from the on-screen content in Frozen. Gad might not have the star power, but he plays Olaf wonderfully.

Kristen Bell plays Anna and she is so vocally expressive in Frozen that it is surprising how few voiceover jobs she has on her resume. Bell and Idina Menzel (Elsa) play off one another well and have similar vocal ranges, so they sound like they could easily be sisters. The cast is rounded out by Jonathan Groff (Kristoff), Ciaran Hinds, and Alan Tudyk who all managed to act wonderfully with only their voices.

It is not horrible, but it feels so familiar that it manages to come across entirely as stale, making one wonder why Disney pushed forward with the project as opposed to just letting it go.

Everything old is new again in The display biz industry these days, so it only seems sensible for Disney to attempt a resurgence of the cartoon musical display brand that taken over the beginning ’90s. The canny appreciation for the past play of Cold comes just in here we are at Thanksgiving holiday, providing not just to children but also the mother and father who increased up estimating conversation and singing music from Beauty and the Monster, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Aladdin. The disadvantage of trying to revive that unique miracle is that Cold seems a little like a Las Las vegas honor show: it strikes all the identifiable surpasses without quite catching the spirit of what it’s paying honor to. Very generally depending on Hendes Religious Andersen’s traditional story The Snowfall Queen, Cold loads the outdoor patio with big strong songs, discussing bad guys, crazy sidekicks, lovable figures (ready made to become vacation merchandise) and not just one but two (!) new Disney princesses. Parents will not grumble about anything that maintains their attention while also keeping children amused for several hours. Still, even with eye-popping movement, strong voice-over activities and a energetic feminist inclination, Cold fails to deliver of latest Disney master high factors Twisted and, especially, the live-action Captivated, instead providing combined results nearer to The Princess and the Frog type and Pixar’s Fearless.

The story starts in appealing style with younger siblings Ould - (initially voiced by Livvy Stubenrauch) and Elsa (Eva Bella) coming out of bed for some night time trouble in the family experience. Elsa, the older of the two, is not just an average master. She was created with the ability to create snow and ice with her simple arms. That means the siblings can skateboarding, snowmobile or build a snowman whenever they please, much to younger Anna’s pleasure. Unfortunately, Elsa’s amazing gift soon seems more like a problem when an ice-related accident results in Ould - harmed and their mother and father prohibit Elsa from using her miracle. A frightened Elsa hair herself away in her bedroom, basically walking away from Ould - whose storage of the event has been removed by a please troll master (Ciaran Hinds). Not that Ould - (now voiced by Kristen Bell) is willing to give up on her sis so easily. She is pleased when Elsa (Idina Menzel) comes of age and transcends to the throne, but trouble occurs again when Elsa’s capabilities go public during an discussion over Anna’s love-at-first-sight attraction with wonderful viewing prince Hendes (Santino Fontana). Elsa stuns her constructed topics with upset jolts of snow and ice, running to the mountains and basically freezing over her whole beach Scandinavian town in the middle of summer season. Local dignitary the Fight it out of Weselton (Alan Tudyk) claims Elsa a creature, but Ould - knows better and eliminates to track down her sis and bring her back to australia.

Elsa, the most powerful and conflicted personality, is disappointingly marginalized when the focus changes entirely to Anna’s standard hero’s pursuit. Despite the point that Elsa is the personality with the story’s impressive arc, Ould - is the plucky, courageous and lovely one, so she gets the highlight. She also gets the really like interest—not just Hendes, but also orphaned hill man Kristoff (Jonathan Groff)—and the crazy partner, an irrepressible discussing summer-loving snowman known as Olaf (Josh Gad). Elsa gets a energy ballad. If that appears to be out of balance, it is. Elsa and Anna’s connection is the core of the story, but never gets the adoring care and attention provided in Disney’s significantly excellent previous feature, Wreck-It Rob. The poor personality perform here is all the more amazing since it comes from Wreck-It Rob co-writer Jennifer Lee, who gets only movie program credit on Cold and also provides as co-director with Frank Money (Tarzan and Surf’s Up).

Co-songwriter John Lopez provided to irreverent Broadway strikes Opportunity Q and The Book of Mormon, but the poor quality mature modern arrangements he offers up here (composed with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez) owe a far bigger debt to the smash hit, Evil. Menzel obviously straps over Elsa’s increasing, sappy, “Let It Go,” an anthem of banal self-acceptance that cannot create up for the film's lack of attention in her personality. Most of the songs are enjoyable if forgettable, though Ould - and Hendes share an enjoyably unique duet known as “Love is an Open Door,” and Olaf’s show-stopping crazy number “In Summer” provides one of the few minutes when Cold fully lives up to the Disney’s oldies that have come before. A more significant mix of custom and advancement is on display in the seven-minute cure Get a Horse!, which comes with Cold as a reward starting brief.
